simplify

I stumbled upon this application that I think will make writing on a computer simpler – I’ve been using it for 10 minutes and already… relief. Thought I’d share. It’s called WriteRoom and is a text-writing application (only for Mac users – although I’m sure there are similar windows apps out there) that does that and ONLY that. A full, blank screen. No distractions. It’s great. Try it out.

  1. kyle-

i was intrigued and tried it out, and you’re right- this is incredible. i didn’t realize how tired my eyes were until just now. thanks so much for sharing!!

  2. Wow, thanks a lot kyle. I’m trying to finish a paper and struggling to keep focus with frisbees and scantily clad women whirling about, not to mention my itunes and email! This is just what I needed!

  3. The windows equivalent is called “Dark Room.” The link to download is here:. You also need to download .NET Framework Version 2 here.

  4. Anything to keep me off of Middlebury Confessional. I’m excited to try this out!

  5. sweeeeeet!

  6. Just wanted to say I’ll be posting on this soon (yeah right). WriteRoom is cool, but it’s NOT free, and definitely NOT worth the $25 they’re asking for it. Those of you on PC should grab Q10 (http://www.baara.com/q10/), which is free and just as good. For the cross-platform approach try http://writer.bighugelabs.com/ which saves what you write to their server and can even post to blogs!!!!

You can also rig Q10 to work on mac, even in true full screen (if you have an intel), but that’s beyond the scope of this post… I’ll link to that post when it eventually gets written 🙂 For the adventurous, it works straight out of the box with Darwine…

But I heartily recommend the web-based writer. Though “true” full screen only works on pc :-\

And q10 is way better than darkroom. And it has typewriter sounds (you can turn them off) sampled from Amelie 🙂
